New report highlights concerns about late prostate cancer diagnosis

9th April 2018

Many UK men with prostate cancer are not being diagnosed early enough, putting them at a higher risk of a worse outcome.

This is according to a new report from the men's cancer charity Orchid, which has revealed that 37 percent of prostate cancer cases are diagnosed in stages three and four, by which time it may be too late for the condition to be optimally treated.

Moreover, 42 percent of prostate cancer patients reported their symptoms to their GPs twice or more before being referred, while 23 percent of all cancer cases are diagnosed by emergency departments, with the majority of these cases being late-stage.

With prostate cancer cases set to rise dramatically over the next decade, the charity has issued this report – timed to coincide with Male Cancer Awareness Week – to prompt UK health chiefs to take this issue seriously.

Rebecca Porta, chief executive of Orchid, said: "Urgent action needs to be taken now if we are to be in a position to deliver world-class outcomes for prostate cancer patients and their families in the future."
