New report highlights continuing rise in NHS waiting times

12th May 2017

Waiting times for NHS urgent and emergency services in England have risen in the last half-decade, according to a new report.

Analysis from the Health Foundation has indicated that waiting times for many services reached their worst levels for the last five years in 2016-17, with 2.5 million people having to wait longer than four hours to be seen.

Despite this, the report also indicated that the quality of care for some of the most prevalent killer conditions, including heart attack, stroke and cancer, is generally holding up relatively well.

However, it was noted that national data on the quality of care received by NHS patients lags behind information on waiting times, meaning it may be too early to tell whether the pressures on the NHS are affecting care quality.

Tim Gardner, senior policy fellow at the Health Foundation, said: "Funding for the NHS in England will need to increase if these hard-won gains to the quality of patient care are to be upheld and built upon in the future."
