New report highlights prevalence of preventable cancers in UK
A new report has raised concerns about the high number of preventable cancers affecting people in the UK.
The Cancer Research UK study suggested that nearly 600,000 cancer cases in the UK could have been avoided in the last five years if people had healthier lifestyles, with around 40 percent of all cancer cases being preventable in this way.
Smoking remains the biggest preventable cause of cancer by some distance, accounting for more than 314,000 cases in the past half-decade, with a further 145,000 cases avoidable by adopting a healthier diet.
Other key steps many cancer patients have failed to take include maintaining a healthy body weight, cutting down on alcohol and protecting skin when out in the sun.
Harpal Kumar, Cancer Research UK's chief executive, said: "We hope all parliamentary parties will acknowledge that cancer is set to be an ongoing challenge and one which needs careful planning and investment across prevention, diagnosis and treatment."
Another recent report from Cancer Research UK indicated that obese cancer survivors are more likely to lose weight than those with a healthy weight and obese people without cancer, suggesting that many people find it difficult to take such issues in hand until it is too late.
