New report shows fall in UK HIV transmission rates
The government has welcomed the findings of a new report showing a fall in HIV transmission rates in the UK.
Public Health England's new elimination of HIV and HIV testing reports for 2017 offered evidence that mortality rates among people with HIV who are diagnosed promptly and receive treatment are now comparable to the rest of the population.
Moreover, HIV transmission among gay and bisexual men has fallen, while London has met all of the global UNAIDS 90:90:90 targets, with 90 percent of people living with HIV infection having been diagnosed, 97 percent of patients receiving treatment and 97 percent of those being treated achieving viral suppression.
Public Health England attributed this progress to the deployment of effective preventative measures including condom use, expanded HIV testing, prompt treatment and the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP).
Dr Valerie Delpech, head of HIV surveillance at Public Health England, said: "We celebrate these extraordinary achievements, which are the result of a comprehensive response involving many key players and organisations."
