New reports highlight need for modernised contracts for doctors

New independent reports published by the government have underlined a number of ways in which doctors' contracts need to be revised as part of wider changes to the NHS.

The two documents have suggested that current contracts for both consultants and junior doctors need to be changed to make them fit for purpose, with added onus on higher quality medical education and research, as well as delivering better results for patients.

Such alterations will need to take place in a way that ensures contracts remain fair, affordable and competitive in international terms, with a wide review of medical sector pay as a whole to be undertaken.

Other key elements highlighted by the reports include the need for more flexible working patterns and better training, rewards for current clinical excellence and a new principal consultant pay grade.

Health minister Dr Dan Poulter said: "The government accepts the majority of recommendations and observations in the independent reports as a basis for discussion and will work with the medical profession to achieve the best outcome for doctors and patients."

The reports have also been broadly welcomed by the British Medical Association, which has pledged to engage doctors on the new contract proposals.
