New Research could Unlock Canine Meniscal Damage Treatment

24th January 2024

Research conducted by scholars at the University of Liverpool is believed to be groundbreaking, potentially paving the way for the development of an innovative test that could minimize reliance on surgical assessments for canine meniscal damage.

Canine meniscal damage refers to injuries or tears in the C-shaped cartilage located in a dog’s knee joint, often resulting from trauma, degeneration, or joint instability.

Issued in the Journal of Small Animal Practice, the research analysed synovial fluids from just over 150 canines who were treated for medial patella luxation or cruciate ligament rupture.

Specimens collected from the dogs underwent examination through a method referred to as nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, aiming to identify alterations corresponding to the canine’s injury.

Christina Pye, the head author, stated, “Late meniscal injuries in dogs can be a challenge to diagnose in practice without surgical intervention, and the availability of a minimally invasive test by means of a joint tap to diagnose meniscal injuries would be very useful in these cases.”

Pye went on to add, “We would like to thank BSAVA PetSavers for providing the funding for this research, without which this work would not have been possible.”
