New resource launched to address tuberculosis in vulnerable patients

20th January 2017

The government has announced the launch of a new resource that aims to tackle the spread of tuberculosis (TB), with a specific focus on underserved populations.

Working in partnership with TB Alert and NHS England, the new resource is aimed at TB Control Boards and their partners to address the proliferation of the disease among homeless people, drug users, migrant populations, people with mental health problems and those in contact with the criminal justice system.

It will enhance understanding of the health needs of these populations in relation to TB, supporting the design and delivery of multi-agency programmes and services to better meet their needs.

The resource offers a framework to act as a basis for collaborative programmes of work to reduce the burden posed by the disease, providing practical examples of past successful initiatives.

Dr Eamonn O'Moore, national lead for health and justice at Public Health England, said: "Our partnership with TB Alert recognises the value of working with vulnerable patients and their advocates to design and deliver services more appropriately and effectively to the benefit of all."
