New smoking cessation campaign Stoptober announced

10th September 2012

The government has announced plans to launch a mass smoking cessation campaign called Stoptober this October, with support from Cancer Research UK and the British Heart Foundation.

Commencing on October 1st 2012, the event aims to encourage smokers to quit the habit for 28 days, receiving support and encouragement through TV and radio advertising, as well as a daily messaging service and roadshows around the country.

Studies have shown that people who are able to stop smoking for four weeks are five times more likely to stay smoke-free, thus helping them to avoid the risk posed by heart disease and lung cancer.

The Department of Health campaign will also be supported by companies such as Next, Unilever and Morrison's, which will be encouraging staff and members of the public alike to take part.

Chief medical officer Professor Dame Sally Davies said: "This is the first time that we have launched a mass quit attempt like Stoptober. I would encourage people who want to quit to get involved."

The government has implemented a number of measures to curb smoking across the UK this year, including the introduction of new laws to prevent large shops and supermarkets from keeping tobacco products on display.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801445874-ADNFCR
