New steps announced to improve quality of NHS maternity care

18th October 2016

The Department of Health has announced a number of new measures designed to make giving birth on the NHS safer for new mothers.

Around eight million pounds will be made available for multi-disciplinary training as part of the safer maternity care action plan, with at least 40,000 pounds available to each NHS trust in England.

Key measures include a 250,000 pound maternity safety innovation fund to help create and pilot new ideas for improving maternity care, while new maternity ratings for every clinical commissioning group will be published.

Meanwhile, a new national Maternal and Neonatal Health Quality Improvement Programme will be established for trusts to exchange ideas and best practices, with a consultation to be launched to help develop a safe space to allow clinicians to speak openly about mistakes or examples of poor practice.

There will also be a consultation on a new rapid resolution and redress scheme, offering financial support to families in cases where avoidable harm has occurred.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "These comprehensive measures will give practical support to help trusts improve their approach to safety – and help to foster an open and transparent culture so that the courts become a last resort, not an automatic first step."
