New technology allows for improved lighting in deep-tissue imaging

A team of US researchers have developed a new method of focusing diffuse light inside a dynamic scattering medium containing living tissue, potentially revolutionising medical imaging.

The Washington University in St Louis researchers have been able to improve the focusing speed of time-reversed ultrasonically (TRUE) encoded optical focusing for applications in living tissue.

Engineers used a virtual internal 'guide star' at the targeted location, detecting the wavefront of light emitted to determine an optimum phase pattern that allows scattered light moving along different paths to focus at the targeted location.

The new TRUE technology combines focused ultrasonic modulation and optical phase conjugation techniques to greatly facilitate noninvasive optical imaging in deep tissue and photodynamic therapy.
