New Tobacco Control Plan for England highlights further measures to cut smoking

19th July 2017

The government has unveiled its new Tobacco Control Plan for England with the stated aim of achieving a "smoke-free generation".

Following the expiry of the previous plan at the end of 2015, the new plan has introduced targets to reduce smoking prevalence among adults from 15.5 percent to 12 percent or less by the end of 2022.

By the same date, the government is looking to cut the number of 15-year-olds who regularly smoke from eight percent to three percent, and the prevalence of smoking in pregnancy from 10.7 percent to six percent.

Other specific commitments outlined in the plan include the continuation of mass media campaigns to promote smoking cessation, a reduction in the inequality gap in smoking prevalence, and better access to training for health professionals on how to help patients quit smoking.

The campaign group Action on Smoking and Health (ASH) has welcomed the proposals, while calling on the government to place pressure on tobacco companies to help bankroll these efforts.

Deborah Arnott, ASH's chief executive, said: "Funding must be found if the government is to achieve its vision of a smoke-free generation. The tobacco industry should be made to pay a through a licence fee on the 'polluter pays' principle."
