New UK chief veterinary officer takes over

9th March 2018

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has announced that Christine Middlemiss has formally taken up her new post as UK chief veterinary officer (CVO).

Ms Middlemiss succeeded Nigel Gibbens on March 1st, with the outgoing CVO stepping down after ten successful years in the role.

She previously served as CVO for New South Wales in Australia, with her tenure marked by major improvements to biosecurity across many farming sectors, including implementation of new outcome-focused and risk-based biosecurity legislation, online animal certification processes, and improved disease control approaches.

Her appointment comes at a time when the government is pushing forward a number of animal welfare reforms, including making CCTV cameras mandatory in slaughterhouses, a potential ban on third-party puppy sales, and a new draft animal welfare bill.

Ms Middlemiss said: "It is a privilege to take over from Nigel and lead my veterinary colleagues to support our farming and food industry on the UK reputation for high health and welfare of our animals."
