New UK gene analysis technology competition launched

3rd December 2013

UK businesses are to be incentivised to create cutting-edge technology for use in the mapping and analysis of genes via a new competition.

The ten million pound initiative has been introduced by the Department of Health and will see companies submitting entries until February 5th 2014, with winning proposals to be announced the following month.

Victorious organisations will be funded to develop high-tech products to help identify and treat inherited diseases and cancer. The contest is designed to drive forward innovations in computer code or hardware, or improvements of existing software and devices.

Health minister Lord Howe said the announcement is "good news for patients, for the research sector and for the economy – creating jobs and growth in our world-beating life sciences industry and helping the UK compete in the global race".

This project runs alongside previously-announced government plans to map the DNA code of up to 100,000 NHS patients with cancer and rare diseases by 2017.

Run by Genomics England, this gene mapping initiative will pave the way for the development of personalised treatment approaches and new ways of diagnosing conditions earlier than ever.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801668304-ADNFCR
