NHS Confederation calls for support for mental health stigma campaign

18th January 2012

The NHS Confederation has highlighted the importance of continued support for the Time to Change campaign, which aims to help dismantle stigmas surrounding mental health issues.

Steve Shrubb, director of the confederation's Mental Health Network, congratulated the initiative on the success it has achieved thus far, as well as welcoming the recent grant funding pledge for the organisation.

However, he said the government must now be prepared to take responsibility for the bulk of the campaign's funding, as tackling stigmas has been identified as a central tenet of the national mental health strategy.

According to Mr Shrubb, the purpose of the scheme is to ensure those affected by mental conditions come forward and seek help, particularly those in black and ethnic minority communities.

"There remains much more to do and the government, public and politicians must continue to support this campaign," said the expert.

Time to Change is operated by charity organisations Mind and Rethink, with high-profile supporters including Stephen Fry and Gok Wan.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801268167-ADNFCR
