NHS England announces rollout of new clinical assessment system
NHS England is calling for every hospital trust to adopt a new clinical assessment system developed by the Royal College of Physicians.
The National Early Warning Score (NEWS) system was created with the aim of establishing a standardised approach to clinical assessment across the country, and is believed to offer the potential to save nearly 2,000 lives and 627,000 bed days every year.
Under the system, patients are assessed on key measures such as breathing rate, pulse rate, blood pressure, temperature, level of consciousness and oxygen saturation, which are scored and plotted on a chart that shows the level of clinical care needed and the risk of deterioration.
NEWS is currently being used by more than 70 percent of trusts, but NHS England is looking to have the system in place across every acute and ambulance setting by 2019, meaning staff who move between trusts can rely on a consistent set of diagnostic measures.
Sir Bruce Keogh, national medical director for NHS England, said: "I want to see every hospital in the country using the NEWS approach by 2019 as we continually strive to make sure the NHS delivers the highest standards of care possible."
