NHS England launches major PrEP implementation trial to prevent HIV

A new nationwide trial has been launched by NHS England to assess the benefits of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) therapies for HIV.

From September, PrEP will be provided by the NHS over the course of a three-year trial to an estimated 10,000 people, in what will be the largest single study of its type in the world.

Sexual health clinics in London, Brighton, Manchester, Liverpool and Sheffield will be among the first to start enrolling patients, with more clinics will join in October and full implementation across England expected by April 2018 at the latest. 

Participants will include men, women, transgender people and individuals who have a partner whose HIV status is not known to be controlled by antiretroviral treatment.

HIV infection rates in England are falling due to increased prevention, diagnosis and treatment programmes, with this study aiming to determine whether or not PrEP can accelerate this progress.

Simon Stevens, chief executive of NHS England, said: "This major new intervention should complement and supercharge the wide-ranging and increasingly successful effort to prevent HIV."
