NHS England launches one-stop shops for cancer diagnosis
The NHS is launching a series of rapid diagnostic and assessment centres as part of NHS England's drive to detect and treat cancer early.
These one-stop shops will be piloted in ten areas, with each operating in a different way to ensure they meet the needs of their local communities and diagnose cancer in people who do not have so-called 'alarm symptoms' for a specific type of cancer.
People with non-specific symptoms such as unexplained weight loss, appetite loss or abdominal pain are often referred multiple times for different tests for different cancers, a process these new centres are designed to end.
Patients will be expected to receive a diagnosis within two weeks of attending, with some given a definitive diagnosis or all-clear on the same day.
Cally Palmer, national director for cancer at NHS England, said: "Early diagnosis is crucial to saving lives and providing peace of mind for patients, which is why we are driving forward plans to revolutionise our approach to cancer in this country."
