NHS ‘faces increasing elderly care costs’
The rising number of elderly people requiring care will result in a major increase in NHS costs in the coming years.
This is according to new research from the University of Liverpool and University College London, published in The Lancet, which indicates a likely 25 percent increase in the number of people over 65 who will need care between 2015 and 2025.
It means that by 2025, there will be 2.8 million elderly people requiring nursing and social care, with cases of disability related to dementia set to rise by 40 percent among those aged 65 to 84, while other forms of disability will increase by about 31 percent.
Responding to the findings, NHS organisations are calling on the government that will be elected on June 8th to ensure the health service receives the support, resources and manpower needed to cope with this rise in demand.
Professor Helen Stokes-Lampard, chair of the Royal College of GPs, said: "We need a properly-funded, properly-staffed health and social care sector with general practice, hospitals and social care all working together, and all communicating well with each other, in the best interests of delivering safe care to all our patients."
