NHS ‘facing recruitment crisis because of Brexit’

16th February 2017

The Welsh NHS Confederation has raised concerns that Brexit could make it harder for healthcare institutions to hire the staff they need.

According to the organisation, state-run healthcare providers are heavily reliant on overseas staff, particularly recruits from other European Union (EU) members.

As a result, the Confederation is worried that some services might become unsustainable once Britain leaves the EU and the single market.

"Our reliance on the EU workforce has increased in the last few years, probably due to tightening of UK immigration policy on non-EU workers," the body stated.

The Confederation added that the priority after Brexit must be to make sure the UK can continue to recruit and retain health and social care staff from the EU and beyond.

This, it said, should happen alongside "increasing the domestic supply through robust workforce planning".

According to figures from the organisation, 1,139 EU nationals were directly employed by the NHS across the UK in September 2015.
