NHS ‘has had busiest winter ever’
The NHS has been under unprecedented pressure throughout the winter, officials have stated.
According to NHS Providers, this has been the "busiest winter ever" for the health service.
Indeed, chief executive Chris Hopson said the system has been "running hot" and occasionally "overwhelmed by the demands placed on it".
This, he warned, means patient safety is being put at risk, the Guardian reports.
Deborah Gulliver, a senior research analyst at NHS Providers, added that the likelihood of trusts reaching and moving beyond breaking point is increasing.
"For patients these difficulties are distressing and potentially dangerous," she said.
Ms Gulliver warned they are also demotivating and demoralising for the clinical workforce.
She went on to praise the "extraordinary efforts" of frontline staff for making it through the winter without a "full-blown crisis".
"However, trusts are telling us that it was a close-run thing," she added.
