NHS hospitals ‘to be rated online’

11th August 2009

NHS hospitals will be the subject of scrutiny in the future, it has been announced, as consumers will be able to rate them on a variety of factors over the internet.

The news was announced by health secretary Andy Burnham this week and involves patients marking hospitals on things such as cleanliness, service, car parking and quality of food.

According to Mr Burnham, the scoring system will offer “an unparalleled opportunity for hospitals to be made aware of any issues and act to improve their services, helping to drive up standards across the board and become more patient focused”.

He added that the resource may help patients to gain a more objective picture of where they might like to be treated in the future.

Last month, Mr Burnham advised pregnant women in the UK to follow standard advice with respect to swine flu – including regular hand washing and avoiding contact with those who have contracted it.
