NHS ombudsman warns of ‘serious failings’ in mental health services
NHS ombudsman Rob Behrens has warned of "serious failings" in the treatment of mental health patients, with many suffering serious harm and some dying.
In a new report, he said shortcomings are continuing to be found in specialist mental health services across England, the Guardian reports.
For instance, he stated that some patients are not being diagnosed or treated properly, while some are being discharged too early.
Mr Behrens said this is having "catastrophic consequences" and taking a "devastating toll" on patients and their families.
Responding to the report, Professor Wendy Burn of the Royal College of Psychiatrists said it exposes some "alarming care failings".
As a result, she has called on ministers to ensure NHS mental health services are adequately funded.
"Unfortunately, our latest research shows mental health trusts’ income is lower than it was in 2012," Professor Burn commented.
Sophie Corlett, director of external relations at mental health charity Mind, added that the findings of the report are "shocking but unsurprising".
