NHS organisations demonstrate strong financial positions in 2010/11

11th August 2011

NHS organisations have predominantly been successful in their financial management efforts in 2010/11, according to an Audit Commission report.

Data from the regulator shows that in the last fiscal year, only nine out of 276 primary care trusts, strategic health authorities and NHS trusts were unable to balance their books, with an overall surplus of 1.5 billion pounds being delivered.

The information has been welcomed by the NHS Confederation, but the body nevertheless suggested that this progress will be difficult to maintain due to the need to make widespread savings in the coming months.

As such, deputy director of policy Jo Webber called for the government to support healthcare bodies in order to ensure that they are able to make the most of their current strong footing.

"Without this support, services will struggle to change and improve and patients will be the losers," she added.

Earlier this month, the confederation expressed concerns over NHS IT policies, after a Public Accounts Committee highlighted problems with current plans to implement a fully integrated care records system.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800697230-ADNFCR
