NHS patients given access to Personal Health Budgets

4th December 2012

The government's new Personal Health Budgets scheme has been introduced across the UK, following the success of pilots conducted over the last three years.

Under this new initiative, patients are provided with an amount of money to help them design a package of care and support from clinicians and others, thus giving them more control over the nature of the treatment they receive.

According to analysis of the pilots, which were carried out at 20 sites, this new model of care was able to improve many people's quality of life and reduced the number of times they needed to attend hospital.

Benefits were regarded as being most substantial among those with the highest needs – the group at which the new national scheme will initially be aimed.

Care and support minister Norman Lamb said: "Independent analysis has now shown that personal health budgets can put people back in control of their care and make a significant difference to their quality of life."

The government confirmed earlier this year that 1.5 million pounds has been set aside for the first stage of the rollout of this project.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801500367-ADNFCR
