NHS ranked as top international healthcare system in new report

A new report assessing international healthcare providers has ranked the NHS as the best-performing national healthcare system.

The Commonwealth Fund's new 11-country report surveyed data to measure and compare patient and physician experiences across wealthy nations, including the UK, US, Australia, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, Germany, Canada and France.

It was shown that the UK's health service ranked first overall when all metrics were considered, with the NHS also topping the charts in terms of care process and equity.

For example, it was noted that seven percent of people with lower incomes and four percent with higher incomes reported that costs prevented them from receiving care, a three percentage point gap that was much smaller than in lower-ranked nations like the US.

However, it was also noted that on the measure of healthcare outcomes, the UK's performance was considerably worse, ranking tenth out of the 11 nations included in the survey, ahead of only the US.
