NHS staff urged to get vaccinated to prevent spread of flu
NHS workers are being asked to get vaccinated against flu as soon as possible in order to curb the spread of the disease.
A group of leading doctors and nurses, including the UK's chief medical officer Professor Dame Sally Davies, have written to NHS staff to emphasise their shared professional responsibility to get immunised in order to protect the health of the public.
Currently, it is estimated that 59 percent of NHS staff have been vaccinated against flu, but in some trusts fewer than three in ten staff are protected. This increases the risk of these workers passing on the flu to patients or family members.
This is a particular cause for concern given that last week saw an 86 percent increase in the number of people newly admitted to intensive care with confirmed flu cases of flu, as well as a threefold increase in the rate of people admitted to hospital with flu.
Professor Sir Bruce Keogh, NHS England's medical director, said: "The recent flu figures are a reminder that NHS staff should protect themselves, patients and their loved ones by getting vaccinated. We should have a measured debate about making this the norm."
