NHS technology programme extended to first ambulance trusts

25th January 2018

Three ambulance trusts are to share GBP 10 million in funding to roll out a key NHS technology programme.

The South Central Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust, West Midlands Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust and North East Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust have been selected as the first ambulance trusts to join the Global Digital Exemplar programme.

This scheme is designed to transform trusts into internationally-recognised exemplars of how digital technology can help deliver exceptional care, with these organisations sharing these learnings and experiences with other NHS bodies.

Focus will be placed on areas including ensuring clinicians have access to patient records, the use of remote diagnostic tools such as video consultations, and providing in-vehicle Wi-Fi access.

The three trusts will share an investment of GBP five million over a two-and-a-half-year period, with the remainder of the funding total to be provided by the trusts themselves.

Professor Jonathan Benger, national clinical director for urgent and emergency care at NHS England, said: "Digital technology has the potential to transform ways of working and improve patient care in ambulance trusts, from ensuring paramedics can access a patient's medical record to improving trust efficiency in systems behind the scenes."
