NHS trusts ‘taking action to prepare for efficiency measures’

10th November 2010

NHS trusts across the country are making amendments to their operational practices in order to prepare for incoming government-led efficiency improvement measures.

Steve Iliffe, editor of online publication Health Matters, stated that healthcare bodies are avoiding filling vacancies, while seeking to maximise productivity to ensure they can cope with a 33 percent reduction in administration budgets by 2015.

He stated that while some trusts will be able to cope with this process without affecting the end user experience, changes will be "felt keenly" in other areas due to the strain placed on already tightly-stretched budgets.

The comments come in response to a recent survey by trade union Unison, which stated that many hospitals are seeing increased workloads and staff shortages as they look to make cutbacks.

It also showed that 32 percent of hospital workers believe this is leading to a decline in care quality.

Mr Iliffe acknowledged that the efficiency measures will cause difficulties in some areas, stating: "This will cause a lot of discomfort, although it is less clear how much impact it will have on patient care, for good or bad."ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800227841-ADNFCR
