NHS warns of financial shortfall

29th March 2018

NHS Providers has warned that hospitals, ambulance trusts and community services are facing a serious financial shortfall over the coming year.

The organisation has predicted a deficit of more than GBP 900 million for 2018-19, while it also believes the NHS in England does not have enough beds or manpower.

Indeed, figures from the organisation suggest that one in 12 posts are unfilled, including more than 9,000 doctors positions and almost 36,000 nursing jobs.

Chris Hopson, chief executive of NHS Providers, acknowledged the government has committed to increasing long-term funding for the NHS.

However, he said this makes "no immediate difference to the tough task facing trusts for next year".

The government this week confirmed that 40 NHS hospitals and community services are to benefit from a GBP 760 million cash injection, with one large scale scheme being announced every year going forward.
