NHS workers ‘must be more aware of mental health issues’
NHS staff at all levels have been called upon to show greater awareness of the mental health issues which may be affecting many patients with physical conditions or their families.
Andy Bell, deputy chief executive at the Centre for Mental Health, has raised concern that mental illness is not seen as a "priority issue" and is often treated as a completely separate matter from physical health.
He suggested this attitude may be preventing early interventions against symptoms such as depression or anxiety, which could otherwise help many patients achieve a faster recovery from their problems.
The comments come in response to a recent report from Denmark stating that men whose partners have breast cancer are at a much higher risk of suffering from a severe mood disorder.
Mr Bell said these findings are "not surprising", adding that the study should serve as a reminder of the need for more attention to be paid in this area.
He added: "It really demonstrates the importance of GPs – and indeed all health workers – having a good working knowledge of mental health issues."
