Nikon lenses ‘demanded by Nasa’

24th December 2009

Nikon, a company which provides high-tech lenses for the scientific industry, has received an order from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa), it revealed this week.

Nasa has requested that Nikon supply it with a total of 11 D3S digital SLR cameras and seven AF-S NIKKOR 14-24mm f/2.8G ED lenses, which it plans to use for photographic documentation.

They will be carried on Nasa’s space shuttle and will be used to photograph activities at the International Space Station alongside existing equipment, which includes Nikon D2XS digital SLR cameras, NIKKOR lenses and Nikon Speedlights.

Since the Apollo 15 mission in 1971, the firm has been supplying Nasa with its latest products for its scientific and space research.

In early December, Nikon announced the launch of two new super-resolution microscopes – N-SIM and N-STORM – products that are designed to provide higher resolution than that which can be achieved by conventional optic models.
