Nine in ten hospitals in England experience overcrowding during winter

6th February 2017

The vast majority of hospitals in England have experienced ward overcrowding this winter, according to a new report.

Analysis from BBC News has indicated that the number of patients on hospital wards in England has risen to unsafe levels at 137 out of 152 NHS trusts – around nine in ten – since December 2016.

At any given time, hospitals are meant to have no more than 85 percent of their beds occupied, in order to minimise the risk of infections and delays in getting treatment. However, these figures indicate that this limit is being exceeded on a routine basis.

Chris Hopson, chief executive of NHS Providers, said: "Above 85 percent and the risks start rising, and once you get into the 90 percent [area], it is significant. You don't get this in other countries and it just shows the pressure hospitals are under."

The BBC report also noted that many patients have been contacting the broadcaster in the last few weeks to raise concerns about long waits for treatment, or operations being cancelled at the last minute.
