Nintendo to appoint new PR partners for Wii U launch

24th July 2012

Videogame giant Nintendo has put its entire UK consumer and corporate PR business out to pitch as it prepares for the launch of its next home console, the Wii U.

The company is ending its relationship with the Chime Communications-owned agency Good Relations – which has declined to re-pitch – as it moves ahead with what is likely to be the biggest gaming hardware launch of the decade so far.

It is thought that the process is currently at an early stage, with chemistry meetings to be held with agencies over the coming weeks before a shortlist is drawn up and pitches begin at the end of August 2012, reports PRWeek.

A gaming industry insider said: "The challenge for the chosen agency will be keeping the existing Wii platform commercially viable as well as evoking excitement and anticipation in consumers and the industry for the Wii U launch."

Nintendo launched Wii in 2006 and has sold 95 million units worldwide, making it the biggest-selling console of its hardware generation, ahead of Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation 3.

The Wii U features high-definition visuals and an innovative motion-sensing tablet-style controller, around which new gameplay concepts will be built.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801414248-ADNFCR
