Norbrook Laboratories launches bovine respiratory disease best practice guide

31st October 2016

Norbrook Laboratories has announced the launch of a new practical control guide for cases of respiratory disease affecting cattle.

The new best practice guide for the control of bovine respiratory disease (BRD) provides farmers with practical advice on herd management to help them avoid economic losses as a result of the disease, which costs the UK cattle industry an estimated 80 million pounds a year.

Calves severely affected with pneumonia usually display signs of respiratory distress, nasal discharge, coughing, pain and in some cases death. However, earlier signs such as loss of appetite, weight loss, high temperature and shallow breathing may also be connected.

The new guide provides advice on these symptoms, while recommending several approaches for controlling or preventing the condition.

Steph Small, veterinary advisor for Norbrook, said: "The important thing to remember is that calf pneumonia is a multifactorial disease and farmers should consider a holistic approach, instead of trying to isolate single elements."

The BRD guide will be made available for free from local veterinary surgeons and Norbrook territory managers.
