Norbrook’s Alamycin LA 300 to offer reduced milk withdrawal period

21st February 2017

Norbrook Laboratories has had a label change for its long-acting antimicrobial injection Alamycin LA 300 approved, allowing the product to offer a reduced milk withdrawal time in cattle.

The update has been ratified by the UK Veterinary Medicines Directorate and will mean the long-acting antimicrobial injection now provides a milk withhold period of eight – rather than ten – days, reducing the impact of milk waste and improving production efficiency.

Alamycin LA 300 protects cattle, sheep and pigs against bacterial infections with a single dose. A standard dose of 20 mg per kg provides activity for three to four days, while a higher dose of 30 mg per kg can be used for a longer duration of activity.

It contains the active ingredient oxytetracycline, which prevents bacteria from producing essential proteins needed to grow, and can prevent a wide range of harmful diseases.

The change in withdrawal period for milk will take effect immediately, with the withdrawal period for meat when treating with Alamycin LA 300 remaining unchanged.

Rebekah Dudek, a veterinary advisor for Norbrook, said: "Discarded milk has a direct impact on farmer profits and the reduced withdrawal period for Alamycin LA 300 means that farmers can now benefit from throwing away less milk."
