Novartis and Science 37 announce new clinical trial collaboration

8th March 2018

Novartis has announced an expanded collaboration with Science 37 that will use virtual clinical trials to assess new therapies.

Up to ten studies will be launched by the partners over the next three years, blending virtual and traditional models with increasing degrees of decentralisation towards a mostly "site-less" approach.

Virtual trials use digital technology to allow clinical trials to take place partly or entirely at a participant's home or their local doctor's office, rather than at a central trial site such as a large hospital.

Science 37 has developed customised enterprise software to facilitate this process, allowing patients to take part in studies using mobile devices and telemedicine services. The planned trials will begin in the US later this year.

Rob Kowalski, interim head of global drug development and chief medical officer at Novartis, said: "With our shared vision of futuristic trials enabled by technology, we're excited to expand our collaboration with Science 37 to pioneer a new, patient-centric research model."

Novartis was an early investor in Science 37 and has already initiated virtual trials for cluster headache, acne and nonalcoholic steatohepatitis in partnership with the company.
