Novartis appoints partner to support French biotechnology centre expansion
Novartis has handed a contract to Jacobs Engineering Group ahead of a project to expand its French biotechnology centre in Huningue.
Jacobs is providing engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM) services to increase the Novartis Pharma Biotechnology Centre's production capacity by 70 percent and create a second line of purification.
This will involve the addition of cell culture bioreactors to one of the world's largest production facilities for monoclonal antibodies from mammalian cells, and will allow multiple drugs to be manufactured simultaneously.
Around $100 million (76.34 million pounds) will be spent on the development work, which will take place over the next four years.
Robert Norfleet, senior vice-president for life sciences at Jacobs, said: "We're proud to have this opportunity to draw on our extensive global EPCM expertise for a project that can help Novartis improve the lives of people who depend on its treatments."
The company is relying on the steady expansion of its portfolio of newer therapies to help offset the recent impact of the loss of patent exclusivity on its cancer therapy Glivec in the US.
