Novartis launches campaign to tackle hypertension in urban communities
Novartis has announced the launch of a new collaborative initiative that aims to address high rates of elevated blood pressure in low-income urban communities.
Coinciding with World Hypertension Day 2017, the Novartis Foundation is partnering with a number of organisations – including Intel, the NCD Alliance, city governments and local partners – to introduce the project, which is named Better Hearts Better Cities.
Bringing together the expertise of food suppliers, health authorities, employers and city planners, the scheme will develop local solutions that improve cardiovascular health in cities, and will initially be introduced in Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia, Dakar in Senegal, and a city in Brazil to be announced later this year.
Intel will act as a digital advisor for this initiative, performing IT assessments in the three cities and utilising these insights to design a more sustainable health system that incorporates next-generation technology infrastructure.
Ann Aerts, head of the Novartis Foundation, said: "We plan to create a network of partners to co-design, implement and evaluate interventions that strengthen urban health systems while seeking to innovate the way prevention and care is provided."
