Novo Nordisk joins gender equality call to action

26th August 2008

Novo Nordisk has joined the call to action for gender equality to help accelerate global progress towards the third Millennium Development Goal (MG).

The third MDG calls for the empowerment of women and promotion of gender equality and last week, the Danish minister for development cooperation handed over a torch to Lise Kingo, executive vice president of Novo Nordisk at a ceremony in Copenhagen.

Novo Nordisk said that, as a torch bearer, it is dedicated to improving awareness of the effect of diabetes on the empowerment of women and development.

It added it will support this work by boosting prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease to overcome this barrier.

Ms Kingo said: “Women are uniquely affected by diabetes that all over the world results in life-threatening complications.

“Women have a higher diabetes-related morbidity and mortality due to biological, cultural and socioeconomic factors.”

She added diabetes can cause problems for both mother and child when acquired during pregnancy, while women are at a disadvantage when getting diagnosed and receiving treatment.

Earlier this month, Novo Nordisk announced the acquisition of 3,304,800 B shares in Novo as part of its ongoing share repurchase programme.
