Novo Nordisk launches FlexPen

8th September 2008

Novo Nordisk has announced the launch of the net generation of its pre-filled insulin pen, FlexPen.

The company presented the launch the product at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes.

It said the new device builds upon the standards of the existing FlexPen product, while additional features provide enhanced safety, ease of use and convenience for diabetes patients.

The new version of the FlexPen requires 30 per cent less force when injecting, while the firm claims it also provides superior dose accuracy when compared to SoloStar.

Other new features include coloured cartridges and packaging to aid insulin identification and a simple twist mechanism for attaching and detaching needles.

Professor Andreas Pfutzner of the Institute for Clinical Research and Development in Mainz, Germany, said: “This next generation of FlexPen is very welcome because it makes the injection process more comfortable for patients.”

He added the new features would help boost treatment compliance in patients.

In a survey, a 95 per cent of patients using the next-generaiton FlexPen said they would prefer to use it when compared to the older version, with 98 per cent of patients claiming it took less effort to inject.

In June 2006, Novo Nordisk said the US International Trade Commission was investing the OptiClik insulin delivery system from Sanofi-Aventis, which it claimed infringed on its patents in the country.
