Novo Nordisk reports on diabetes forum

15th March 2007

Novo Nordisk has issued its response to the Global Changing Diabetes Leadership Forum it hosted in New York earlier this week.

The forum, which involved a number of government officials, patient and healthcare organisations, policymakers and diabetes sufferers, discussed the methods of redefining the focus of healthcare to base it around the needs of patients with the disease.

At the event, the participants agreed that the key to fighting the disease was a full-cycle method including involvement at all stages, ranging from preventing individuals from contracting diabetes to treating the most serious complications.

Lars Rebien Sorensen, president and chief executive officer of Novo Nordisk, said: “Only by placing the person at the heart of diabetes care and rethinking healthcare systems around transparency and measurability can this silent killer be defeated.”

He called on the pharmaceutical industries to come together and publish performance statistics to enable patients to make better informed decisions on the value-for-money of treatments.

Mr Sorensen also announced the launch of the Changing Diabetes Barometer, which will act as guidance for policymakers in their measurement of progress in combating the disease.

Earlier this month, Novo Nordisk announced that its once-daily compound Levemir (insulin detemir) had been approved by the European Commission for use in combination with oral antidiabetic drugs.
