NPA offers advice to pharmacies affected by rioting

11th August 2011

The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) has issued guidance to UK pharmacists affected by the widespread rioting that has hit the country this week.

In response to the civil unrest that has sprung up in London and other major cities, the association is advising pharmacies to lock their doors, bring down their shutters and alert the authorities at the first sign of trouble.

The NPA guidance stated that the impact of any such closures on patients can be minimised by providing information on nearby outlets that may still be open, while substance misuse clinics that rely on supplies from pharmacies should also be kept informed.

It also reminded those utilising insurance provided via the NPA to ring the appropriate helpline if they need to make a claim following a riot.

Leyla Hannbeck, head of information at the organisation, said: "The safety of the pharmacy team and customers is paramount."

This comes in the same week that the NPA represented the community pharmacy sector at a Metropolitan Police briefing on the public disorder incidents.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800697398-ADNFCR
