NPA offers members smoking cessation support

7th February 2008

The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) has increased the support on offer to pharmacists who wish to provide a stop smoking support service.

It made its announcement following statistics released by the Information Centre for Health and Social Care, which revealed nearly 165,00 English people beat their nicotine addiction with NHS support last year.

This represented nearly a 30 per cent increase on the numbers using NHS help in 2006.

Neal Patel, the NPA’s head of communications, said members could now be provided with a Stop Smoking Toolkit, containing marketing resources and patient feedback forms.

“These materials are helping support our members to take advantage of the opportunity the smoking ban has created,” he explained.

Research published last month by the Department of Health revealed around 9,000 smokers have called the NHS’s smoking helpline to receive support on beating their habit.

Furthermore, around 73,000 people had visited the website launched to support the Getting Off Cigarettes campaign in has been running since December 26th.
