Obesity surgery may resolve type 2 diabetes

5th March 2009

Experts believe that it may be possible to resolve type-2 diabetes by performing obesity surgery.

According to researchers at the University of Minnesota, 90 per cent of all patients with type-2 diabetes are overweight or obese.

As obesity rates rise in developed nations, so does the prevalence of type-2 diabetes – but the latest study suggests that surgery can be beneficial on both counts.

Investigators analysed 621 studies that had been published between 1990 and April 2006, all of which had looked at the impact of obesity surgery on diabetes.

Publishing their findings in the American Journal of Medicine, they reveal that 78.1 per cent of people with diabetes benefitted from a complete resolution of their condition, while 86.6 per cent experienced resolution or improvements.

“This systematic review and meta-analysis demonstrate that bariatric surgery has a powerful treatment effect in morbidly obese persons with type-2 diabetes,” the researchers wrote.

The study authors noted that the findings could have potential benefits for “millions of people” and called for clinical trials to compare the effectiveness of obesity surgery with medical therapies.
