Omega 3 ‘brings cardiac health benefits’

22nd January 2010

The British Nutrition Foundation has endorsed the effects of fatty acids such as omega 3 in the promotion of cardiac health.

Sara Stanner, nutrition science programme manager for the organisation, stated that intake of high doses of the nutrient, which is most commonly sourced from fish oil, can offer protection against heart disease due to the active ingredients EPA and DHA.

Her comments come in response to a new study from the University of California which established a link between omega 3 intake and recovery from coronary heart conditions.

Meanwhile, results from a separate trial suggested that the use of intravenous fish oil therapy can reduce the risk of inflammatory disease.

Ms Stanner added that alpha-linolenic acid, another form of omega 3, may also have health benefits, though these remain less well-established.

She said: “It is not yet known whether you would get the same benefit from consuming alpha-linolenic acid as you get from foods rich in EPA/DHA.”
