One-fifth of UK children ‘suffer from poor oral hygiene’

7th November 2016

A new report from Action for Children has highlighted widespread oral hygiene problems among some of the UK's youngest children.

Surveying 2,000 parents across the UK, it was found that one in five children under the age of five brush their teeth once a day or less frequently, in spite of recommendations that teeth should be brushed twice-daily without fail.

Moreover, a similar percentage of parents say they only sometimes supervise children in this age group to brush their teeth, which again defies NHS guidelines advising parents to supervise brushing in children until the age of seven.

This lack of supervision makes it more likely that children will not brush as effectively or often as they need to in order to ensure their oral hygiene is up to the necessary standard to support optimum health.

Carol Iddon, managing director of Action for Children, said: "Too many children continue to be badly affected by poor oral health – being able to smile with confidence is important for a child's self-esteem and lifelong physical health."
