One-third of Britons ‘fear visiting the dentist’

24th May 2017

A new survey has indicated that a significant number of people in the UK are putting off receiving essential oral health advice due to a fear of visiting the dentist.

Conducted by Fletchers Solicitors, the poll of 2,000 British adults indicated that 34 percent are scared to attend dental appointments, more than the 24 percent who feared visiting the GP and the 17 percent who are apprehensive about getting their eyes tested.

Among those who feared attending medical appointments, 79 percent said they put off seeking advice from professionals as a result.

When asked about the reasons for these fears, 69 percent said it was because they were scared of a previously unknown health problem being detected, while 52 percent had a phobia of the equipment used.

Meanwhile, 45 percent cited bad childhood memories, 22 percent blamed previous negative experiences, and 14 percent pointed to the potential pain as an offputting factor.

Ed Fletcher, chief executive of Fletchers Solicitors, said: "It is important that everyone is at ease when they have a medical problem or question, so that they speak to a medical professional when they need to."
