Only half of Britons exercise more than once a week, study shows
A new study has demonstrated that many people in the UK are not spending the time on exercise needed to maintain optimal health.
Conducted by Arthritis Research UK, the study questioned 2,000 people about their attitudes to doing exercise – such as walking, stretching, running or cycling – for at least 20 minutes, finding that only 53 percent exercise more than once a week.
This is despite the fact that 75 percent said that they wished they exercised more than once per week, with 17 percent admitting to never doing any form of exercise at all. Only 18 percent do some form of physical activity every day.
The top three reasons given for putting exercise off were not having enough time in the day, feeling too tired and cold weather, while nearly one in 20 cited a lack of appropriate exercise clothes as the reason for avoiding the habit.
Moreover, 49 percent said they had or currently have joint pain, with 51 percent being put off doing exercise as a result – despite evidence that physical activity can help to relieve pain and stiffness.
Dr Tom Margham, an Arthritis Research UK spokesperson, said: "I see many people who are troubled by joint pain, but few of them know how important exercise is for both managing and preventing joint pain."
