ONWARD Medical take Spinal Cord Simulator to Testing

9th October 2023

Through the application of an experimental brain computer interface, ONWARD Medical has finished the first-in-human implant of their spinal cord stimulator, created to help increase limb mobility for individuals with spinal cord damage.

At Switzerland’s Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois, an ONWARD ARC-IM stimulator was used during surgery for the first time. Just over one week following this, the CEA-Clinatec BCI WIMAGINE cordless brain-computer interface was also implanted.

The insertion of the device is a component of ONWARD’s clinical trial, which examines the success of their innovative spinal cord stimulation technology.

The brain computer interface records the cognitive desire for limb movement and uses AI to decipher these messages. Data on this is subsequently collected by the ARC-IM stimulator, which perfectly influences the patient’s spine. This has already been proven to help initiate movement in the paralyzed lower legs.

Moving forwards, ONWARD intends to releasing the study’s results, a decision which has received backing from the European Innovation Council.

The Doctor who carried out the device implementation, Dr Jocelyne Bloch, explained that “we are now working with the patient to use this cutting-edge innovation to recover movement of his arms, hands, and fingers. We look forward to sharing more information in due course.”
