Oral health problems ’cause economic losses through sick days’
A new report has highlighted the considerable economic costs associated with people taking time off work due to oral health problems.
Research from the Oral Health Foundation has indicated that one in 20 working British people have been forced to take time off work in the last year due to oral health issues, which is equivalent to more than 1.2 million days taken off work.
With estimates from the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development indicating that one day of absenteeism costs an average of 82.86 pounds to the economy, this adds up to a total economic shortfall of 105 million pounds.
The study has been published to coincide with National Smile Month, with the Oral Health Foundation stating that the findings should compel workplaces across the UK to take a more engaged interest in their employees' health, while workers themselves should also think more about their oral health habits at work and at home.
Dr Nigel Carter, chief executive officer of the Oral Health Foundation, said: "By increasing education about sugar and supplying employees with healthier alternatives, there is an excellent opportunity that would benefit both employers and employees."
